On the edge of Clarksdale, Mississippi, at the end of a remote dirt road, stood a small, ramshackle church. It was not a place of worship, but rather a sanctuary where many sought refuge in times of poverty. Legend has it that the building was transported to the wild mint field by hand, carried on the shoulders of two dozen men.
On the outside, the church was plain and anonymous, but inside it was lit by stolen neon signs, Christmas lights, and a jukebox donated by the sheriff’s son. It was a worldly place where locals who knew where it was could share home-brewed liquor, socialize, and dance their worries away. They called their ramshackle juke joint Saint Julep, and the oral histories that have been collected paint a picture of this magical place where “smiles were always free, and salvation had a very special scent of sweet mint.”
