In 1980, Gwen K. Vroomen quit her monotonous job in Dearborn, Michigan, went down to the corner bar and—at the bartender’s urging—threw a dart at a world map on the wall. She had never heard of Goa, India, but she knew immediately that she had to go there. Three months later, she was celebrating the Hindu New Year in a tea garden high in the hills of Kerala, as fireworks exploded below.
Of that evening she wrote: “I was revived by color, liberated by the vibrating unknown.”
Her self-proclaimed “journey out of the dark,” filled with unforgettable tales of night markets, river cruises, and thrilling moped rides, inspired an entire generation of young Americans to break away from the grind of everyday life.
