23-year-old Neal Orris is desperately looking for an escape from his dead-end job and the run-down Virginia town where he grew up. When a tip from a clairvoyant leads him to a barn that hides his late father's secret obsession - a perfectly maintained 1964 Shelby Cobra Roadster - he sees his chance. His first stop is the tobacco farm where his best friend, Ike, works, and together they never look back.

Heading for the racetracks of Palm Springs and the prize money to keep them afloat, their journey becomes a whirlwind of questionable motels and strong drinks, cool swimming pools and hot debutantes, burnt rubber and cigarette smoke. At each stop, the friends invent new pseudonyms and identities, an innocent game that drives them further into decadence and perdition.
